Does anyone know if they ever plan on adding this?  I know we can getSheetId(), but I would then like to have that functionality so that no conflicts would happen if someone has named a sheet something unexpected.

Don't know if they will. But you can always fetch an array of sheets and use the find()method of the Array class to get the sheet by id.
