I am one of the owners of this group. I'm interested in getting your feedback about the group. What are your ideas? Are you currently using Apps Script a lot? How important is Apps Script to you? Are you using Apps Script more or less? Can you get the answers that you need? What are your hopes or concerns about Apps Script? What do you want this group to be? How can this group remain active and relevant?

I used to code a lot with Apps Script.

Nowadays, thanks to AI, everything has become much easier. However, these days I only focus my GAS development on my professional Google Workspace needs. For personal projects, I prefer using AI for full-stack development.

Using AI has certainly reduced my need for communities like this, but I can't imagine a future without them. People will always surprise me in ways that AI simply can't.

Thanks !

Alan,

Thanks for reaching out.

Apps Script is incredibly relevant for enterprises large and small that use Google Workspace.  That said, frontier AI models have addressed nearly all questions about GAS for about the last year.  Every question I've seen addressed to this group has generally been a one-shot question-and-answer prompt to gemini.google.com.

I'd love to see more knowledge sharing in the group based on current or past projects.  More open-source GitHub repositories and other sources of inspiration.  Bruce McPherson's work is a testament to that idea.

There are Reddit communities built around that kind of sharing and perhaps the listserv is going the way of the dinosaur.  Not sure.

Steve Horvath

I’ve started using Google scripts. I tried through Gemini first. Then I tried Claude as some were not getting solved and Gemini kept me going back and forth without solutions. Claude said the script was broken but Gemini. All those using scripts and AIs can through AIs.
I’m focusing on trying to automate daily routines. It would be nice to get some idea here.

What’s GAS?

GAS = Google Apps Script

By the way, I recommend using the official Google clasp extension for VS Code:

Use the command-line interface with clasp | Apps Script | Google for Developers: https://share.google/TccdQmieIDUF56pVZ

Nowadays, it's the best way to code in GAS.

I’ve started using GAS for work related projects as we are a Google Workspace institution. Having recently learnt JavaScript, I’ve wanted to use GAS to create solutions for myself and co-workers.

Hi,

My name is Steven, a new member, my first post.

As a self-taught coder in Microsoft Office (Excel / Access / Word) VBA I am now stretching out to Google Scripts via use in Google Sheets. As this is Javascript based I also have to learn Javascript.

Despite numerous searches for Google Script with a qualifying search suffix, I only came across this group when I decided to shut down 2 Google Groups I set up with different friends (ex work based) many years ago. These sites were hardly used. While I was doing those tasks, suddenly, in Recent Activity, a listing for this group appeared. That listing got me interested so I immediately applied to join.

Currently I am going through posts in this group looking for stuff that I need in my self-teaching process.

A solution, or solutions, for any task, no matter what it does, helps me in teaching myself Google Scripts and Javascript, because I can use the code as working examples. I copy the solution code and extract the portion of which I am not familiar, build on it and add it to my library.

This group is invaluable for self-teaching newbies like myself. An issue with AI generated sample code resulting from public searching, is sometimes it gets it wrong.

My [Australian] 5c (we no longer have 2c coins) worth.

Thank you for allowing me to join.

Steven

Welcome Steven,
I'm like you, I learn best by seeing code, examining it and deconstructing it. I then use it to build upon.

This is a great place to as questions and see code solutions.

Here's a template of mine with a bunch of stuff for ya to chew on.

Look at the resources section too.

Cheers

Apps scripts have been more and more important to me. I've learned a lot, developing, for example, a webapp that shares student data only with parents who have pre-signed a consent form. I love how practical the scripts are. And I know that you will steer us in ways that have yet dreamed of.

Thank you, Alan.

I love Google sheets and app scripts. I have been developing different apps and will share them as. I go along.

I think it would be great to collect links to different apps created as demo apps. Usually when I create an app, I demo it with a link to download.

Web apps are really limited only by your imagination.

Cheers all

Morning

I use Apps Script daily.

I typically get solutions from AI however I like to scan the posts here for new ideas and solutions.

I'm sure that if / when I face a sticky problem that the AI isn't finding solutions for I would also present it in this forum.

I am also interested in some collaborative development with members who share a specific interest or problem, however the only time I have proposed a collaboration area here, it was very niche (for freelancers working in Spain wanting to avoid buying an application for Verifactu-compliant invoicing), I only had a response from a vendor. Nevertheless, I would try again if / when another area arises.

Thanks to all the moderators and posters for keeping this space valuable.

Kind regards

Andrew

Morning!

Apps Scripts is now 90% of my daily job (enablement and development in a Berlin tech tourism company — i.e., a bit of everything). I am completely self-taught and mostly use AI to write the actual code, but am also in a bubble where only two or three people at my 1000+ company know how to use GAS. I use this community to see what other people are working on, how they tackle problems, what supports their solutions, etc. Currently hunting down gas-fakes permission from IT as I type 😋

Seconded on seeing/having a way to share demo apps for more visibility. I really liked seeing the consultancy page that recently went out here.

Best,
Uma

Thank you to everyone who responded. This conversation has 13 responses and 118 views. 5 of the 13 posts mentioned AI. I think it's safe to conclude that using AI to produce code is decreasing the relevance of this group. I'm sure there are many other factors that have influenced the amount of activity here.
Apps Script seems to have an appeal to the motivated "Do It Yourself" type of person who will take the initiative to find a solution. For people, businesses, and organizations that have little or no budget for programmers, they may be able to automate a few tasks themselves. Or find an add-on that does the job.
Do you think there are still plenty of small businesses and organizations that could use Apps Script but just don't realize what it can do?
Even though this group has focused on programming questions, there are plenty of other related topics. What would cause someone to choose Apps Script over other alternatives? How can you promote yourself or your Apps Script solution? If you hit a wall with Apps Script, how do you take your app to the next level?

Alan,
According to stats, roughly 50% of small to medium businesses still use spreadsheets for cash management and inventory.

That's a huge business potential for people to create apps to help small businesses enhance their spreadsheet usage.

The nice thing about creating Google apps script apps is that it is basically JavaScript. So finding someone for further development or make corrections is not an expensive endeavor. Not to mention proficiency. Google Sheets can greatly help. Novice business owners take their spreadsheet, inventory and cash management to greater levels...

Anyone can submit a Sheets add-on to the Google Workspace Marketplace. There are already thousands of add-ons, and probably at least hundreds of Sheets add-ons. There is a lot of competition. Anyone looking for an add-on that isn't already established, or for a less used purpose, needs to search and hopefully find something that isn't displayed. For anyone trying to enter the Google add-on marketplace, it's not easy. I don't know of any way to market your add-on outside of the Workspace Marketplace. If you have inside connections to a specific business or industry, that would help. Being an "insider" is better than developing a superior app. You could develop a great app that goes nowhere because you're bad at sales.

I don't doubt that there are unmet needs for Sheets add-ons, but is it worth it to provide an app that meets a need? What is the demand? Are people willing to pay anything? How do you monetize it? How do you protect your code? Do you want to protect your code? There are already thousands of Sheets templates

You can access free Google Sheets templates directly through the Google Template Gallery, or download them from reputable third-party sites like Tiller, Smartsheet, and SlidesCarnival. Alan,
Web apps find their true potential in multi person access where sharing spreadsheets compromises other data not meant to be seen by all and to small businesses to reach and interact with customers.
For instance: schedule a service, status of a service or order, ordering, sharing documents without needing to share each doc, simple crud applications and login potentials for a public facing app but restricted access.

I built a login web app that when users logged in, they were given access to spreadsheets without me having to share it with them via sheets. I could revoke access at any time. At midnight, all sheets permissions were revoked so no sheets remained open and accessible indefinitely. As noted in the thread, create an app for parents to login and see only their childrens grades/records.

I get so frustrated that through shetes alone, multi users can see the main database that they are writing too. It(separate sheet) must be shared in order to read/write to.

Absolutely. Most businesses don't even know Apps Script exists. For instance, the latest tool I developed for my company is a lightweight script that sends an email to the client containing an upload link. Through this link, clients can upload very large files (such as videos of 1 GB or more). The script handles chunked uploads and saves them directly to our Google Drive account, ensuring everything is safely organized.

Before this, the company had spent three years struggling to receive large files, often relying on mailing physical CDs, USB drives, or third party sharing companies (with PIi issues) . Since implementing this script, everything has become seamless. Doing it with Apps Script was very straightforward. By comparison, building an external platform with a dedicated server, a full-stack JavaScript environment, etc., was daunting for them. The moment I suggested building it natively within Apps Script, they were thrilled: it lives directly inside Google Workspace and it's completely secure.

As you rightly pointed out, there are countless small automation tasks—optimizing emails, reports, spreadsheets, file transfers, and more—that could be easily handled with Apps Script. Companies just miss out either because they don't know it exists or because they lack someone on the team with the drive to set it up.

Hi Alan,

Completely agree with Keith here. I want to come back into this conversation and share a little bit about why GAS is instrumental in my role now.

80% of our generic day-to-day operations remain entirely within Google Workspace. By this, I don't mean department-specific work, but rather the "glue" that keeps us together. Of this, Sheets remains the most-used part of Google Workspace, but sensitive data remains the primary obstacle for automation. For example, I am in the People department, meaning I work a lot with employee data. Using RaaS in a Google Sheets was my starting point, as I could effectively have dynamic reports from our HRIS without having to worry about anybody outside of my direct team accessing the sheet. As Keith mentioned, the natural next step is having information in one sheet, multiple users having access to the sheet, but having the information these users can see be limited.

Once I realized web apps were an option and taught myself clasp/Claude Code, it became our go-to solution to support complex, niche processes within the People department. One example of this is event coordination. Some events used to take two people weeks to set up, including personal email comms, adapting prep materials for each new group, facilitator outreach and briefing, small group generation, slide deck updates, I could go on and on. With my web app, I now have a platform designed specifically to set this event up. It does not do anything on my behalf, but it ensures whenever I have to make a decision, I have all the information in one space and have a specific amount of options I can choose from. For example: we use our HRIS to have a dynamic report of which employees need to attend this event. I assign "cohorts" to group employees together, and then can add a cohort to an "event". The event generation aspect allows us to create the calendar blockers pre-populated with the texts, room bookings, attached prep materials, and to automatically add everyone from a cohort to the respective blocker. I can easily switch an employee from one cohort to another, which removes them from the calendar blocker. It also handles sending personalized emails to each person in the cohort with dynamic information using a mail merger. This is just one partial example, but my team is using GAS now to support anything from performance reviews to helping the security team sign in external guests to budgeting dashboards. None of this can be done in something like Lovable without serious security risks.

The only downside of GAS is the steep learning curve. I put myself through a full-stack bootcamp just to navigate what I was building consciously, and the other employees using GAS effectively here have technical backgrounds to support them. The rest of my team would not be able to create such web apps. Adoption of creating with GAS may remain low, but adoption of the services we are creating with GAS are very high.

A strength of the Apps Script community has always been a willingness
to share information and solutions simply for the satisfaction of
being helpful.
This group is a fully volunteer effort. Google does not support this
group financially. How do we keep the group interesting, active, and
valuable?
Each person is able and willing to "spend" a different amount of time
and put a different amount of effort into the group. What do you think?
Could the group be expanded into a Google Site?
What if the Google site had more than just a discussion forum? Could
it have a separate page for people to promote their Apps Script
solutions?Could the site have the option for people to choose to get
notifications only for topics that interest them?
