Hi All,
Am I'm right that currently onOpen(e) fails if CONSTANTS are declared outside a function?
I have created a trigger that calls the function instead.

No; you can declare constants outside of functions. Can you share the specific error message you are getting, and a sample of your code?

function lurking within my code. All working now :)
