Reading local excel files with appscript

Is there a way for google appscript to access local files? If not, why isn't this possible?

My end goal is an app script that can:

1. Read a local excel file

2. Select certain cells from the excel file

3. Copy them into a google sheet.

The hardest part I'm struggling with is reading a local file. I do not want to have to upload every excel file because I download 10s of them a day.

There's no way for Apps Script to access local files for security reasons.

At the very least, you'd need to open up something with HTML (sidebar, dialog, Web App) , and choose the files to get from your local drive.

By using "Backup and Sync" from Google local files are automatically copied to Drive.

Using Apps script the Excel files can then be converted to Google sheet format and you can process the file.
