Updates of givenName randomly only partially successful or getting partially reverted.

I'm not sure what's going on for sure, but what appears to happen randomly is that a user is updated via direct protocol with a new familyName, which appears to succeed (i.e. no error), but occasionally we will see later (hours or even days) that the familyName on the user still reflects the old familyName, even though the familyName and fullName on the corresponding userProfile does reflect the new name. Has anyone ever seen this before or know what might be going on? I don't see how this could be anything but a problem on the google side of things - maybe an ignored failed commit somewhere, a replication problem, or a stale cache somewhere.
