I am using the Audit API to both extract login activity and export
mailboxes in response to legal/security requests. While it works fine
the unpredictability of how long a request will take is frustrating.
For example, an account activity request can take anywhere from a
couple of hours to days. Can anyone explain the queuing process - and
is there any plans for improvement here?

Chet,

Thanks for your post. Your concern is very valid -- we are aware of the slow response to the Audit API, which is due to a number of recent infrastructure changes at the backend. We definitely have plans to improve this situation as we update several of our existing APIs, and you should expect to hear more from us about it over the next few quarters.

Hello.
Since the concern from our friend Chet did not change after 1 year, at least for my 3 requests on Audit API (It's taking 3 days), how long (an average) the process takes to complete the processing?

Hi Adelson,

In my limited experience using the Audit API we have had to ping Google Support when the audit requests did not return within a reasonable time.

It is usually necessary to provide the domain and audit request ids which is probably best submitted to the Google Support channel and not a Google forum.

Once any issues are addressed the email export would often complete approximately in 24 hours. The activity export would take less than a day.

Regards,
Phil

Hi Phil, thanks for the reply.

We are trying to get this report to see if it has the information that us / customer want.
If it has, we are thinking on develop an app that calls the audit API, request the activity log, parse the report and send the info to a database.
BUT, I think it I'll be impossible, because it seems that the process to retrieve the activity log is not trustful. Imagine to call the API requesting the log from several users from the domain, in a batching process...

Do you know if there is another way of getting this kind of info from Google?

The information we need is the login (date, time, IP Address) from the users.

Thankyou very much!!

Adelson

I had a functioning client to the Admin Audit API that had been successful with past requests (before our transition to the new infrastructure for google apps). Google Support eventually looked into the delay of the admin audit requests we had and resolved the problem. If your requests are stuck in the pending state, and after many days transition to the error state, you will probably need to contact Google Support. You have to be persuasive as they expect the admin audit API to be supported here.

I'd carefully read the terms of service for the Admin Audit API. I can think of one case the admin audit api can be improved, it would be helpful to determine which accounts had been accessed from a specific ip address. Nonetheless, the reports are requested per user account.

I'm afraid I haven't used the Admin Audit API as you envision as part of a batch process.

Thanks,
Phil

Usually 5 days.

If not you have to create a new request.

Hi Phill,

thanks very much.
I have opened a Google Support ticket.

I'll try to get support there.

Best regards,

Adelson.
