trying to use gam to download takeout mail archive file - killing RAM and swap

gam is failing to download largish files from drive - ~7GB as it consumes all the RAM and swap space on the linux vm I'm using to perform the download.

I'm using commands of the following:

gam user [username] get drivefile id [file id] targetfolder /[path to archive folder]/

I have plenty of disk. Can gam be directed to use disk for temporary storage of the file it's downloading instead of trying to store it all in RAM? I don't really want to create massive swapfile for this.
