Fairly recently, I've started having trouble with the GAM UPDATE GROUP SYNC command.

I have a decent number of groups that I synchronize with a local SQL server.  I've been creating a file, and using GAM to synchronize the membership.

Now, when I run the command, for example:

gam update group tech sync member file tech.all

I always get back a message like:
"Getting members of te...@domain.org (may take some time for large groups)..Got 0 members..."

And the group never syncs... instead, all of the addresses in the file are added to the group (again), and no one is removed from the groups.

This is becoming an issue, since some of our building administrators think of their groups as "private" and want people who have changed buildings removed from the old lists.

I can duplicate this problem right now with both 32-bit and 64-bit GAM on windows, and with the 3.31 preview release.

gam info group groupname returns membership.  gam print groups name members seems to start retrieving group names and members, but never actually returns the list.

Any thoughts?

I'm getting the same problem with the print groups command - I am trying to get a listing of the members in the groups. The command will print a list of groups and output them to a file but if I add the parameter to add the members or the users information it falls over and outputs a message about checking the wiki for available commands. It falls over at the point where it is getting the member information.

I'm using the 3.21 release on windows 32

any ideas?

This is related to a similar problem I reported in an earlier thread (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/google-apps-manager/N2tzV4nlk7M).  In my case, both GAM 3.21 and 3.31 preview on Linux (so it doesn't seem limited to Windows).   A group sync always returns 0 members (even though the group has many members).

So, all of the addresses in my sync file are added (or "re-added") to the group, but no existing members who do not exist in my sync file are removed.

Thanks for pointing out the other thread.  Not sure how I missed it...  Except that, for being from a company that prides itself on searching, Google Groups doesn't always search very well.  But I digress...

Thanks for sharing the results from your debug.gam file. It's good to know that the API is returning the list of users.

As far as I can tell without diving into the innards of the Python scripts, the SYNC feature isn't really part of the API -- instead, GAM downloads the list of users in the group and compares them, in memory, to the list of users from your SYNC source.

I expect that they're really related.  Probably something changed in the results returned by the API, and a code update's needed in GAM.

So this looks like it may be an issue for Jay to check.

I know he warns that the column headings in PRINT change in 3.31...

Thanks,

Albert
