Error message in Google Group general information screen

We have our Google Groups configured to require the -group suffix on group email addresses. GAM, however, is able to override that restriction and configure groups without that address suffix. We have a number of Mailman lists which are automatically generated from database queries. Our desire is to omit the -group from the addresses of those lists when we migrate them to Groups, to distinguish them as "official" groups.

We have one such group in production, running with no problems for quite a while. We just set up a test version of another as an announcement-only group and discovered that the management GUI Information -> General information screen displays an error on the Group email address. The error is "This group email is already taken", but as far as we can determine that email address is unused. We found the same error on the earlier migrated group as well. There are placeholder groups with the same name and the -group suffix in the address to prevent their use and possible resulting confusion.

I thought I would ask here before opening a ticket with Google. Has anyone dealt with this situation?

Have you run the GAM command to see if the email address is assigned to another user, group, nickname?

Have you deleted a group recently with that email address?
