Does anyone have any insight into how to make this command work?  Pretty sure I have the project and admin security permissions all properly set up.   The goal here is to update the users sendAs display name. It displays correctly using the old gmail interface, but with the new gmail interface it is showing a different name.

gam user foo...@mycompany.org update foo...@mycompany.org name "New Name"

Robert,

If you're trying to update the sendas name then you want:
gam user foo...@mycompany.org update sendas foo...@mycompany.org name "New Name"

Robert,

I do this: gam user foo...@mycompany.org update sendas foo...@mycompany.org name "New Name"
I verify the change: gam user foo...@mycompany.org info sendas foo...@mycompany.org

In both classic and new mail "New Name <foo...@mycompany.org>" is shown briefly,
then it quickly reverts to "Foo Bar <foo...@mycompany.org>"
In classic mail, the email is sent as "Foo Bar <foo...@mycompany.org>"
In new mail, the email is sent as "New Name <foo...@mycompany.org>"

Talk to Google,

Ross

Ross,

So you are seeing the same thing, or something very similar. For me, when I run the commands it never changes the display name. This persons displayName always returns as something different. This random name only shows up in the new web based version of Gmail, and we do not appear to be able to change it.

Robert,

In Admin Console/Apps/G Suite/Settings for Gmail/User settings/Name format, is Allow users to customize this setting checked?

25 minutes after making the change with Gam, both classic and new mail now show and use the correct value and allow it to be edited.

Nope. This is not allowed, which makes this even more bizarre. Should always be First Last

Robert,

So you're asking "Can the API change the name but not the user?"

Robert,

With this unchecked: Admin Console/Apps/G Suite/Settings for Gmail/User settings/Name format/Allow users to customize this setting
the API accepts an update of the sendas name but it seems to have no effect.

Confirmed. Checking that allows the GAM command to process correctly. Awesome!

Thanks Ross!!
