gam user <who> delete messages query rfc822msgid:<msgid> failing

Hi, folks,

     I'm puzzled! I can't delete an email from my own account thus:

gam user jxa...@ualr.edu delete messages query rfc822msgid:<alongstring...@google.com>

     This is the syntax I know and have used over and over again, but now it says:

User: jxa...@ualr.edu, Service not applicable/Does not exist

     What, does anyone know, gives?

gam user user...@ualr.edu check serviceaccount and see if scopes for mail.google.com passes. (typo in username, user suspended/archived/not licensed, etc.)
