Hi,

Just updated to GAM7 and have tried to assign the archive license to past students but I get an error message:

User: 123...@school.domain, License: 1010340007 (Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals - Archived User), Add Failed: Backend Error (2/20330)

Anyone know what's causing this? Should we be removing all other licenses first before assigning the archive license?

I tried using the "delete licenses" to try and remove all licenses but that syntax isn't supported. Is there a way to remove all licenses at once or do we have to run a separate command to get the list of licenses per user and then pass that list on to another gam command to delete each license?

Any help is appreciated.

You can’t assign the archive license as archive is BOTH a user state and a license.

IF users are in a particular OU you can achieve with:
gam print users query "orgUnitPath='/Archived Staff' isSuspended=True isArchived=false" | gam csv - gam update user "~primaryEmail" archived on

You can also update GCDS and have that manage archiving

Thank you Shaun for clarifying "archive". I just assumed it was another license that we'd apply as it does appear under Google's list of SKUs and licenses (under Subscription). I have gone ahead and "updated" these users and it appears that the license count under Subscriptions is going down.
