I'm running GAMADV-XTD3 6.15.03

Backstory: my company was recently acquired and merged with another company. They are looking at rebranding now. This will mean getting a new domain name for all new emails.

My team has been discussing whether we should make that new domain a secondary domain and have the employees send emails from that new domain name. Part of the concern is setting up every employee so that their new send email is from that new domain.

  • Can I use GAM to change every employee's setting so that the "Send mail as" defaults to the new email address/domain name?
  • Can I use GAM to change every employee's setting so that the "When replying to a message" defaults to "reply from the same address the message was sent to"?

Thanks in advance.

No, you put new-format data into new databases."

My recommendation would be to just rename the accounts to the new domain name, and leave it at that. The old addresses will remain as aliases, so they will still be able to receive email sent to the old addresses. Any new email they send would automatically be sent from the new domain, because that would be their new primary address. If they reply to an email sent to their old address, the reply would come from their new address; however, that will help ensure that their recipients begin using their new addresses, and overall won't really present any issues. The old address could be added (by the user, or via GAM) as a send as address, and users can manually choose to send from the old address if they have a specific need to do so.

So, changing their primary addresses reduces complexity significantly, and that will make the transition smoother and easier. As for your specific questions:
  • You can use GAM to set the new address as the default send as address, but it's much easier and more reliable to just change their primary address instead.
  • I'm not sure if you can change the "When replying to a message" setting. It doesn't look like you can based on the documentation, but I might be looking over the appropriate setting.

Thanks, Chris. That was my helpdesk manager's recommendation as well.

We just went through this 6 months ago when the merged companies took on a temporary name. It was painful, so I was hoping to avoid having to do that all over again.

best,
Dale
