I realize this is an old post but there isn't much out there on this "
Add all current and future users of ORG_NAME to this group with All Email setting."
I created a group back in 2018 using this setting (or whatever it was called back then). Only recently have users reported not being able to send emails to the group but instead getting a bounce back with an error:
"Failed to Load User Properties." I did some research using Gemini. It basically told me the following:
The situation you've described, where a group set up in 2018 to include all domain members now shows a single "Unknown External" member, points to a specific legacy feature in Google Workspace and is the likely root of the "Mailing list expansion problem."
The "All Domain Members" Legacy Setting
Years ago, Google Groups had a straightforward option to dynamically include every user in your domain. Instead of adding each user individually, you could essentially set the group to be a live reflection of all active users.
However, over time, Google has moved towards more explicit and manageable group memberships. These legacy "all-domain" groups can sometimes exhibit unpredictable behavior, especially as user accounts are added, suspended, or deleted over the years.
The "Unknown External" member you are seeing is likely a placeholder or a remnant of this old system and not a literal external user. It represents the dynamic query for all your domain's users.
The solution it gave was to create a new group using a dynamic query (i.e.:
user.is_suspended == false ) and archive the old group. As Gemini always includes the standard disclaimer "
Gemini can make mistakes, so double-check it" I am going some due diligence to make sure that is in fact my best option. Thoughts from the group on this?
BTW, I have used GAM but would classify myself as a beginner with it. Thanks in advance.
