Can't Change Owner of Classroom/Course

I've tried adding owner/changing owner and adding teachers but because the original owner was deleted  all I get is messages like this

Course: 159184551778, Teacher: x...@ashs.stbenets.org, Update to Owner Failed: @IneligibleOwner Only a co-teacher can be invited as owner of the course

First add a new teacher to the course

gam course <CourseID> add teachers tea...@domain.com

gam update course <CourseID> teacher tea...@domain.com

What's your GAM version? This should be handled automatically in Advanced GAM:

If the original owner has been deleted, and it's been more than 20 days ago, it is no longer possible to transfer the course.

The Classroom API does not allow updating a permanently orphaned course.

If the deleted teacher is still listed in Recently Deleted, then you can restore the user temporarily and transfer the course.

This is why it is imperative that leaving teachers take proper care of their Classrooms before they leave. Or you do.

Alternatively, create all Classrooms centrally with a utility account, and just add teachers as co-teachers, not owners.
