Is it possible with GAM, or otherwise, to modify the "from:" headers in a users' saved gmail messages?

The scenario: during a migration from one Workspace to another we needed to use a temporary domain for user accounts in the destination space, and migrated mail was all assigned to be from the temporary domain.  Following migration users were all moved to the final domain.  This is most obvious in a users' Sent folder. It is particularly problematic for email threads started before, then continued after, the migration.  We'd like to re-assign messages to have the correct "from:" address.  I've worked out how to search for such messages, but not how to modify that email header.

Thanks in advance for any information,
Chad

Chad,

There is no Gmail API support for this, thus GAM can't help.
Does any mail system allow modification of received messages? it seems ripe for fraud.

You'd need to download the original message, rewrite the header, import the modified message and delete the original message. You are effectively remigrating the message. Not something I'd recommend...

Thanks, that's what I suspected but was hoping for an exception.  The same extract, modify, append, delete pattern can be done with IMAP, but, as you say, not recommended.

Hi Chad,

Curious to know - Which Migration tool you're using?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

The migration was performed by a contractor, so I'm not entirely sure but I know gam was used for much of it and probably another (proprietary?) tool.
