Temporary error: quotaExceeded - Request rate higher than configured.

Hi

There are like 5 times each year i have to create a group containing ~45k members.

I used to just run gam update group somegrp@mydomain add member file filewithmembers.txt

How can i - if it's even possbile - do it in one day AND avoid "Temporary error: quotaExceeded - Request rate higher than configured."? After ~30k members are added GAM starts throwing that error, and no more group add/remove actions are possible for 24 hours (24h cooldown is my guess).

I have a secondary question too:

with gam update group somegrp@mydomain add members "member@one member@two member@three ..." does it use more or less or exactly the same amount of API calls? if less - how many members can be added that way, with single command?

You should start by checking the cloud console to determine which quota is going over:

https://cloud.google.com/docs/quota

Once you have that information you can request a quota increase from Google. Start with a support ticket which includes your project name from client _secrets.json and the quota you are hitting.

that's the thing - it seems all quotas presented in console.cloud.google.com are ok, none are even close to being maxed out.

Do ALL group membership add commands fail after you get that error or can you wait a minute and add another user?

Yes, all of them fail.

The error popped up yesterday evening, and i'm still unable to add members to any group - hope the "cooldown" is in fact 24h, and i will be able to finish the big group tonight.

And are the members internal emails of yours or external?

That's a LOT of external emails... What's the use case for these groups?

Workspace is a business email solution. If you are sending marketing or mailing list style messages you're better off using a bulk mailer like MailChimp or Sendgrid.

But yes, my educated guess is you are hitting a hard limit on external member adds that's in place to avoid abuse.

Each year whe send an email about all of our programs to polish a) schools b) teachers and c) school principals.

For most "newsletter" like purposes we use Freshmail, but our experienc is that with these members Google Groups works best (with Freshmail ~10% always bounces).

Untill now each year we were creating new groups... we will leave the groups on all time now, and just update them when needed... which should be the idea from the start :D
