Hello,

since today I get the following error when I try to configure a mail forwarding:

gam user [username] forward on [destination-email-address] keep
User: [username], Forward Enabled: True, Forwarding Address: [destination-email-address], Action: leaveInInbox (1/1)

ERROR
: 400: Unrecognized forwarding address - failedPrecondition

I am sure last Friday it was still working. Did google change something on the API or am I completely wrong?

I am using version 3.71 for Linux.

Thanks guys!
Kay

If you've not already, upgrade to the latest GAM release and try again.

So you've confirmed you are running 4.03? What does:

gam version

Show? What command are you running exactly and what error does it show?

Jay

Damon,

Let's call the forwarding user us...@domain.com and the destination user de...@domain.com

What does this show: gam user us...@domain.com show forwardingaddresses
Is de...@domain.com in the list? You can't forward to an address unless it's on the list.
gam user us...@domain.com add forwardingaddress de...@domain.com
gam user us...@domain.com forward on keep de...@domain.com

Damon,

Let's call the two users sou...@domain.com and tar...@domain.com

You want to do: gam user sou...@domain.com forward on tar...@domain.com archive

This will only work if tar...@domain.com is already set up as an allowable forwarding address for sou...@domain.com
To show the allowable forwarding addresses: gam user sou...@domain.com show forwardingaddresses

If tar...@domain.com is not shown, then you have to do: gam sou...@domain.com add forwardingaddress tar...@domain.com
The you can do: gam user sou...@domain.com forward on tar...@domain.com archive

Damon,

gam switched from some old Email-settings APIs to newer Gmail APIs a while back, Google changed the rules on the newer APIs.
So, going forward, you have to define an allowable forwarding address before you can use it.

to GAM for G Suite
Saurabh,

you can invite such a forwarding, as the user in the Gmail settings, but you can never force it, via the APIs or GAM, since you don't own the target address.

So the short answer is No, you can't.
The user has to do it themselves, inside Gmail, so they can get the verification code from the target email.

If your users have the exact same email addresses (apart from the domain) then you can set a Routing/Compliance rule that redirects all users' emails to the other domain's accounts.

yes I am aware of that rule. But in case the case where the username is not the same , their is the issue as then the content compliance rule will not work. any other method to put the forwarding in place , without having to get the confirmation from the user on forwarding .

please suggest

Add the matching email address as an alias on the target domain.

As long as nobody else has the matching address, doing so should have you covered.

Just checking to see if we have a workaround for setting up a forwarding address without user intervention.  We have some users that do not have access to their accounts to add verification codes and as far as I remember we as G-Suite admins were able to add forwarding address and turn it on with no issues in the past.  Any input is greatly appriciated.

Thanks
PJ

Pirooz,

When GAM adds a forwarding address within the same domain, it is automatically accepted.

Thank you Ross, however something strange is going on.  I have GAM 5.11 running on two separate EDU domains.  In one GAM session, I am able to assign a forwarding address to an external address and then turn it on without any user intervention and no Error 400, while in the other domain I am getting the error when trying to turn on forwarding to an external domain.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Pirooz

Pirooz,

Is forwarding enabled in the the admin console for the second domain?

Yes, Ross.  Just verified that both domains have the same exact settings as shown below.

Allow users to automatically forward incoming email to another address: ON

Thanks,
Pirooz

You as the admin, and actually also as user, should never be allowed to forward to external address without verification from the external account.

GM....  I switched to a new computer and tried to install a new GAM project, but I received an error message that I have exceeded my project allowance.
  • verification code:  4/1AX4XfWgFyxmqvLR7zaZF8Syg62bSTAzuEQ1AIO2CFUYlN8CDOENoxWm4sPU
ERROR: {'name': 'operations/cp.5971969365074809921', 'metadata': {'@type': 'type.googleapis.com/google.cloud.resourcemanager.v3.CreateProjectMetadata', 'createTime': '2021-11-03T14:50:00.138Z', 'ready': True}, 'done': True, 'error': {'code': 8, 'message': 'The project cannot be created because you have exceeded your allotted project quota.', 'details': [{'@type': 'type.googleapis.com/google.rpc.QuotaFailure', 'violations': [{'description': 'The project cannot be created because you have exceeded your allotted project quota.'}]}]}}

Project creation failed. Trying again. Say n to skip project creation.

Is there a way to move a project from one computer to another?  If so, please provide steps or a link to a page with instructions.

Thanks!

The project is in the cloud, and not on your device.

Move your two JSON files from the old computer to the new.

Then run an oauth.

gam oauth create

That will create a fresh oauth2.txt.

Thanks, Kim!

I copied the 2 .json files to c:\gam on my new machine, then ran gam oauth create in ps.  I got to the authorize scopes screen, entered "c" to continue to authorization, copied the URL into a browser, then received the error message:

I did delete several projects a few days ago thinking that would allow me to create a new one, but obviously, that didn't work either.  Is there another option?
