Hello Team,

I would like to plan migration of 5 TB box data to Google workspace shared drive/drive using Google workspace migrate tool.

Appreciate if you help me with step by step guide.

Thank you very much in advance.

Gam can't really help here. It's an admin tool, not a migration tool and does not talk to Box at all.

Having said that, there may be other Google Admins on here who've done Box -> Drive migrations and can offer some pointers and tool suggestions.

I have used rclone (rclone.org) to copy files from cloud services to local storage, then to copy files up to a shared drive on GWS.  I also use rclone to pull backups of various GWS shared drives to local storage.  Rclone supports both Box and Google.

The recipe is pretty simple:
1. download and install rclone on a local machine with sufficient storage for your migration
2. Create Box and Google rclone configurations.  Rclone has good documentation to help on this.
3. Use rclone to mount your Box drive
4. Copy the files to a local directory.
5. You can unmount the Box drive after the copy is completed. Considering the magnitude of your move you may want to do this in small bites.
6. Use rclone to mount the GWS shared drive
7. Copy the files now in your local storage up to the shared drive.  Again this will take time, maybe a lot of time
8. Repeat as necessary to copy all the files.

Hello Marshall,

Thank you for your helpful mail. Really appreciate it.

In my case I have been suggested to use Google migrate tool only to transfer date from box to drive.

What’s the outcome requirement, just current files/folders, or do you need version history, permissions, comments, shared links, and Box Notes preserved too?

If it’s content-only, I’ve done Box Drive → Google Drive for desktop on a dedicated always-on machine with a PowerShell/robocopy-style job and success/failure logging. If you need higher fidelity, look at Google Workspace Migrate for Box → Drive/Shared Drives, or CloudFuze if you need more collaboration metadata preserved.

Best,

Chris Frieberg
