Hi all,

How does one disable hangouts in Gmail settings domain wide via GAM?

It's quite confusing cos it is called "Chat" in your Gmail settings as well.

Not very helpful. Doesn't seem to be in the google admin for any of the configurations in the app section either.

Has anyone ever tried this? I can't seem to find a guide with either:

Thanks,

Josh

Josh,

There is no Gmail API support for changing that setting, so Gam can't help.
I also don't see a setting for it in the Admin console.

Are you trying to disable Hangouts entirely or only disable the Hangouts widget in Gmail? Assuming it's the latter why do you want to prevent users from using Hangouts only in Gmail?

We have the same requirement in our company.

Our main problem is that we want to favor usage of Chat, but the chat client users get in Mail app is Hangouts. As Hangouts groups and Chat groups are not compatible, when someone creates a group in the Mail app they are creating a Hangouts group, (not a Chat group as they intended to), and hence you have to maintain group conversations in both Hangouts and Chat (not to mention that if you have disabled Hangouts in your mail settings then you wouldn't get any notification of such group conversation).

Also, there are users who refuse to use Chat application (because they complain about resources usages, which in some extend I agree - Chrome does consume lot of memory) don't want also to have two tabs (mail and chat), they prefer everything in one browser tab: mail + chat, which leads to the problem explained.

As it turns, it would be nice to turn off completely Hangouts from the Mail app, or else use Chat directly.
Maybe an alternative would be turning off completely Hangouts, although I am not sure what other feature would be disabled with it...

Over a year ago I submitted a request to Google, via Buganizer/IssueTracker to " Add Hangouts Chat Admin features/functions to G-Suite Admin API".

See https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/123896461

Perhaps if people 'star' the request, add comments as to desirability, comments on what the lack of the API means to process/automation, it could get more traction within Google?

@Heraldo,

if you disable Hangouts you currently also disable Meet, which you obviously don't want.

It is possible to URL Block hangouts.google.com in both G Sutie admin, and also in your firewall and/or web filter.
When you do, Hangouts will stop working, both on it's own website, and also the one built-in Gmail.

We want this too, because we are a school and don't want students (K-12) chatting unsupervised with our tools.  If they do it on their personal accounts that's their parent's business. We both block hangouts chat for student OUs in our webfilter, and disable hangouts chat in the admin panel for their OU.

However the applet still shows up for them in GMail!  I have ha a few ocassions where the webfilter was not working, and the hangouts applet does show up and works in GMail even though I have hangouts chat disabled for them.  I'm now sure what the disconnect is between hangouts settings and GMail, and also how to disable that applet centrally (as opposed to changing the settings on teh user side - which of course can be reversed).

None of this is possible yet.

All superadmins should have received an email from Google where they said that the settings will be fully separated on 15 June.

So some time after 15 June you will be able to have Meet enabled while disabling Hangouts.
