Add external contacts to directory?

I'm pretty sure it's possible to add external contacts to the directory using the Domain Shared Contacts API (https://developers.google.com/admin-sdk/domain-shared-contacts/).
I'm wondering if this has been implemented in GAM and I'm just missing it. Here's hoping...

Sorry, GAM does not make use of the shared contacts API.

GADS would be the preferred way to add Directory Shared Contacts (external contacts). Assuming you have an LDAP capable identity store, it's actually pretty easy to set up.
