Accurate Count of Total Emails

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is a way to get an accurate count of the number of email messages a user has. I've tried everything I can find in both GAM documentations, and the best I can come up with is:

gam user user(at)example.com print messages countsonly

But that is returning some inconsistent numbers sometimes. And when I compare the numbers with the Gmail Interface when looking at All Mail, they dont always line up, and sometimes are very far apart.

Is there a better or more proper way to get this information for a user with GAM?
