I'm a consultant and have been using GAM since v1.9.1 in 2011.  It's a great tool to accomplish tasks for my clients that Google hasn't seen as necessary to include in the admin interface themselves...or are relying on the Google Marketplace to fill the gap.

I recently came across something else that I didn't realize was missing from Google.  The Contact Directory does NOT contain an organization's group email addresses (i.e. distribution lists) -- it ONLY contains the user account email addresses  After much searching and then finally opening a ticket with Google Apps Support, the official response was:

"From your message I understand that you want to display the e-mail address for your Groups within the Contact Directory for all users. I have checked in our system and at the moment there is no direct action for this option to be applied."

Really Google?!  Although I enjoy (most) of Google's products, sometimes I find myself scratching my head over some pieces that are missing.  Especially something that seems as simple and obvious as including ALL of an organization's emails in the Directory (e.g. Global Address List).

With that background, my question is...does GAM implement the Google contact API in a way that I can either:
  1. Add a Google Group email address to the Google Directory so it shows up for each user in their Directory list AND the type-ahead?
        / OR /
  2. Add an email address to every user's personal Contact list?
Thanks!

Hi Bruce,

We use domain shared contacts (a directory for adding external users) which allows us to add group email addresses to the directory for all users. However, I don't believe GAM has implemented this functionality and unfortunately it is only available via the API.

We use https://code.google.com/p/google-shared-contacts-client/ which is a tool to make adding/changing things in domain shared contacts easier - you essentially feed it a csv file and don't need to write all the API code yourself.

That said, I've found that it's not perfect, and hasn't been updated since 2010.

What do you mean you can´t ?
It works for me,

Go to the group settings / Manage / On the Left Side options the last one which is "information" / Open it go to Directory / Group Directory / Check the option "List this group in the directory"

I Notice that IF you create the group using GAM, even though you check the box, the group won´t show up on the directory.  I don´t know why.
But if you manually create the group through google groups app, the group will show for everyone in the directory.

Any group can be added to the GAL with:

gam update group include_in_global_address_list true

See:
