Tagging Groups, Is there a way to tag a group for categorization?

Since you cannot see when a group was created or when it was last used. 

I would like to add small tags to each group to be able to search and identify groups.

-- creation year

-- department

-- last reviewed

Is there a tag field that I am not seeing?

Is the only way to do this by adding information to the group description?

Groups do not have custom schemas or rich profile information like users do. Thus as you found standardized description is only field that would work. Note description is visible to members and possibly anyone in domain or public.
