Greetings all,

I have this command scheduled to run every week to check that student accounts are Suspended cause sometimes we get the random student who absolutely needs something off their school account even though they are now multiple years out of school.

gam ou '/Z-Former Students/AHS 2023 Grads' update user suspended on

With the new licensing coming, seems we also need to apply the archived license to users as well.

gam ou '/Z-Former Students/AHS 2023 Grads' update user archive true

Has Ross been giving sufficient Diet Coke to make it so you can run both at the same time? Or is this that necessary and I should just hammer google's API with another round of going through several thousand student and reapplying the archived license as well?

If is certainly syntactically valid to say:

gam ou '/Z-Former Students/AHS 2023 Grads' update user archive true suspended on

Try it, what does the API say?

Hmm, it seems to run fine. Interesting.

So archiving a user effectively REMOVES the student and staff licenses right? So I do NOT need to go through and have a script delete license 1010310008 say for students, or 1010310009?

So I could do say

gam query 'isSuspended=True' update user archive true

?

You do not need to archive and suspend at the same time. I think I would actually recommend against it, as doing so can make things more complicated. You can generally think of "Archived" as an account status, so there are 3 account statuses: Active, Suspended, and Archived. Archived and Suspended are functionally the same, the difference is that "Suspended" keeps the Fundamentals license applied, while "Archived" changes the license used from Fundamentals to the Archive license type.

Accounts can be both suspended and archived; so if you need to re-activate the student account, you would need to both unsuspend and unarchive the account if you set both flags to true. Unarchiving the account by itself won't unsuspend the account. If you use the UI to re-activate the account, you would first unarchive the account, then refresh the page to see the reactivate button, and then click it to reactivate. If you instead just archive the account, then you only need to click the unarchive button to reactivate the account.

Archiving accounts only removes the Fundamentals license. It does not affect any paid licenses (Plus, etc.), so they need to be removed separately.

Hmm, according to Google

"Google’s updated licensing model (as of 2025/2026), the short answer is: No, it does not automatically remove the Education Plus license, but it does free up your active seat for reuse. "
