Can you guys each file tickets with Google about these errors? Be sure to create a file named debug.gam in the same folder as GAM and include the debugging output of the GAM commands so that support can see GAM is correctly calling the group settings API.

I've been seeing these backend issues since day one of the Group Settings API but so far I don't think Google's seen enough cases to fix the problem. A few more clients reporting the issue might help.

I am seeing this as well, exact same error. I use a powershell script to loop through all of our groups and apply the settings. The settings being applied are:

who_can_post_message anyone_can_post is_archived true who_can_view_group all_members_can_view who_can_view_membership all_in_domain_can_view members_can_post_as_the_group true message_moderation_level moderate_none spam_moderation_level allow

I ran it outside of the script, applying the update to just one group, and got the same error. If I removed a few settings randomly, it would work, but not consistently.

Hello,
Recently, we started seeing backend errors when trying update group settings to google with the GAM 2.54 version. We upgraded to the lastest GAM 2.55, and we are still having these errors with groups. Is there anything we could do to fix this. We tried excluding some of the group settings but that didnt fix it either.

Thanks
Jeff

Thank you Jay. I have opened a ticket with Google but they say they do not support third party apps. When I sent the output that shows after creating the debug.gam file, the google rep said he wasn't a programmer so could not tell me if it was formatted correctly.

I think it may have to do with certain commands. After some more trial and error, leaving out the "is_archived true" setting made it finish successfully. Hope that helps to point you in the right direction.

Thanks...

Just an update, Google called and emailed me new year's eve, saying that it is a known issue and they are looking to fix it shortly, though they do not have a time frame.

I am seeing the same issue myself.  I tried to perform a very simple command:

gam update group jan5 'at' onixterry.info settings who_can_post_message anyone_can_post

I immediately get the 'Working around Google backend error. Opening group and sleeping 0.5 sec(s)...' error.  I had just created the group a few seconds before.

The same thing happened on an existing group.

Thanks Michael,

For anyone else following this thread, the best way to continue to push the issue with Google and help them prioritize it is to file your own support ticket reporting the issue to Google. The more domains Google sees experiencing this issue, the more likely they are to give it priority for a fix. Feel free to reference this GAM thread in the ticket so that Google can "pool" the issues".

Jay
