Hi all,

I am administrator for various groups using my organisation email address. I have previously sent messages to groups with attachments and there haven't been any issues. Recently, I have tried to send smaller messages with a smaller attachment, but I am unable to send the message and I am told that messages have an 8MB limit. I am wondering if our subscription has only just changed recently, or something like that.

Can someone please advise?

Thanks,
Max

I don't see anything in the API or the admin console, time to ask Google.

This is the maxMessageBytes group setting. It should be set to the max value of 25mb by default.

See: https://developers.google.com/admin-sdk/groups-settings/v1/reference/groups
maxMessageBytesintegerDeprecated. The maximum size of a message is 25Mb.
You can try to change the value but it stays at 25M

$ gam update group testgroup maxmessagebytes 8m

Group: test...@auroraschool.org, Updated

$ gam info group testgroup maxmessagebytes

Group: test...@auroraschool.org

  Group Settings:

    Deprecated:

      maxMessageBytes: 25M

Yes, the API still reports the setting though so it'd be interesting to see what the value is for their groups.

Thanks for responding. Could either of you explain this in simpler terms? I am not familiar with code, nor do I see any settings for message size in the GGroups settings. As I said, this problem didn't used to exist in our Google Groups. So it seems odd that something has changed.

Best,
Max

What does:

gam info group <email>

show for the group?

What error exactly do you get when sending attachments to the group? (screenshot would help here)

Hi Max,

It was difficult to find official documentation on the 8MB size limit for the standard free Google Group, which I think is a mishap on Google's end. It seems that the free tier only has a maximum file size limit of 8MB. This can be corroborated by searching Google's Support section and you will see plenty of results indicating that the free version of Google Groups has this limitation and only paid Google Workspaces have the 25MB limit https://support.google.com/groups/search?q=8mb+size+limit

Hope this helps,
Nacho
