I was wondering if the functionality within this article is available in some sort of form in GAMADV:
Id love a way to be able to give the messageID to gam and it real back the history of the message.

GAM doesn't support the portion of the Gmail API that gets history. In any case, the API doesn't support what you're asking as per my reading of it.
The history is that of the mailbox, not individual messages. I suppose that if you kept adding/deleting labels to a message, the same messageId might appear multiple times.
Would Google Vault be useful for your purpose?
