We have had to rename some of the custom attributes in GWS and when I view the field names with gam print schemas they still use the original name we gave them. Is there a way to update the actual field name?

Ryan,

The Admin SDK API doesn;t offer much support for schemas, send me a Meet/Zoom invitation and we can investigate.

Where/how did you rename the custom attributes?

I renamed them within the Google workspace, Admin interface.

The Admin interface is changing the field displayName, not the field name.

When you update a schema with GAM, it reads the old schema and applies changes and then updates the schema.
To rename a field from OldName to NewName you would do something like this:
gam update schema Test field NewName displayname "New" type string multivalue endfield deletefield OldName

But this will delete the OldName field from every user!

Before the update you could list the schema values with the OldName field.
After the update you could update the users schema NewName field with the OldName field values.

Be very careful.

I was afraid of that. It may not be worth trying to change the names. Thanks for the info.

Ross, do you know if the current version of the Admin console updates the custom field names? Or is GAM still required to update them?

It appears not to be able to do it.

On the non-profit license level I can see my user defined schemata on the admin console under "User information, and update them.  Your mileage may vary.
