Creating a google group on a subdomain

I found several references [1] that GAM can create a google group on a subdomain; the api supports this even though it is not exposed in the UI.

However, when I issue the GAM create group, it creates a google apps group (eg admin console -> more controls -> groups) rather than a google groups group (eg groups.google.com/a/mydomain.com).

Is the latter possible with GAM?
