Hi,

Do you know how to add group email to the other group email with GAM?

I tried this way but it is no help because it add members of the group to the other group NOT group email to the other group.

gam update group group...@email.com add owner group gro...@email.com

Any idea?

The ability for a group to be an owner of another group is being phased out.  Depending on which documentation you read, it is either already invalid, or deprecated.  The API may no longer allow it.

You can set a group to be a manager or member, but not an owner.

Sothea,

You said: gam update group group...@email.com add owner group gro...@email.com
That added all of the members of group1 to groupother as owners.
Say: gam update group group...@email.com add owner gro...@email.com
This will add group1 itself as an owner of groupother.

The key is to omit the group modifier in front of gro...@email.com.

I'll defer to Brain as to whether owner will actually work; you may substitute manager or member for owner.

Hi,

Has anyone seen any recent confirmation that this is being phased out?  This came in up a thread last year https://connect.googleforwork.com/thread/7583 which highlighted concerns, but we have heard nothing since.

Our groups/mailing list are still working, with groups as owners.  If they will not in the future, we need to know asap so we can find a replacement service.

See https://support.google.com/a/answer/167094?hl=en - at the bottom of the Group Owner section:

A group can have multiple owners.
Note: A Google Group cannot be the owner of another Google Group.

In my GfEdu domain this morning:
  • In the Admin Console, I can add a group as an owner of another group.  (Based on the documentation above, I should not be able to do this, but I can.)
  • In groups.google.com Manage > Direct Add, I can add a group as a member of another group, but I can not change the member group to be an owner or manager.  Error message: A group may not be the owner or manager of another group.
I assume that at some point the code in the admin console will catch up to the documentation, so I made adjustments to how I manage group ownership.  (I don't use GAM for that task - I use a custom program that reads our school database and then adds/removes students, parents, and employees to all of the groups as appropriate.)

I tested GAM 3.61.  Kang...@sstx.org is a group, and employees is a group.

gam update group kang...@sstx.org add owner empl...@sstx.org
adding manager empl...@sstx.org...Error 400: Invalid Input: memberKey - invalid

gam update group kang...@sstx.org add manager empl...@sstx.org
adding manager empl...@sstx.org...Error 400: Invalid Input: memberKey - invalid

gam update group kang...@sstx.org add member empl...@sstx.org
adding member empl...@sstx.org...added empl...@sstx.org to group

Adding the group as a member works as expected.  Adding a group as an owner or manager fails as expected.
