Hello,

The Google Documents List API is currently experiencing an issue in which the content link given in spreadsheet resource entries yields a 404 when requested.  The content link is yielding a 404 because the hostname of the URL is docs.google.com, instead of the currently intended spreadsheets.google.com.

Clients not using the content link, and manually constructing the download URL by concatenating the string "spreadsheets.google.com" with the rest of the export URL are unaffected by this issue.

We're actively working to resolve this issue.  I'll post again here when this issue is resolved.

Thanks so much for your patience,
-Vic

We've fixed the issue.  Everything should be back to normal.

Thanks,

Hey guys,

They are not supposed to be served from spreadsheets.google.com, it was just coincidence.  To improve the quality of things, and to reduce the number of required OAuth scopes, we've started using the docs.google.com host.  This will all be transparent if you use the content link of spreadsheet entries.

We've verified everything is working as expected, so it might just be that users manually constructing the URL need to use the content link of the entry instead.

Thanks,
-Vic

Today [26 Aug, 2011] we are noticing a return of elevated rate of 404 errors in our application and many of them are requests for spreadsheets from the docs.google.com host.  I believe that spreadsheets are supposed to be served from spreadsheets.google.com.

I can provide details about users via pmail if desired.

Hi Patricia,

Sorry that that happened to you.  I am happy to help you get going using the content URL.

We'll be sure to update the documentation, putting more emphasis on the need to use the content link.

Thanks,
-Vic

Hi Vic,

I understand that Google has made a change to start serving spreadsheets from docs.google.com instead of spreadsheets.google.com. This is exactly the kind of change that developers should be made aware of before things get broken on production applications. Your previous email about this explicitly mentioned the ‘spreadsheets.google.com’ as the ‘currenty intended host’, which confirms what everybody was expecting as the ‘normal’ url for spreadsheets. I think developers deserve better notification from Google (targeted notifications like this would be much better than saying that ‘spreadsheets.google.com’ was just a *coincidence* that worked for 2+ years LL ). True, if you use the ‘content’ links of the entries instead, things would have been broken only for a more limited time, but sometimes it is harder for an app to use this than to manually construct the urls with ‘known’ prefixes.
