Today [26 Aug, 2011] we are noticing a return of elevated rate of 404 errors in our application and many of them are requests for spreadsheets from the docs.google.com host. I believe that spreadsheets are supposed to be served from spreadsheets.google.com.I can provide details about users via pmail if desired.
Hi Vic,
I understand that Google has made a change to start serving spreadsheets from docs.google.com instead of spreadsheets.google.com. This is exactly the kind of change that developers should be made aware of before things get broken on production applications. Your previous email about this explicitly mentioned the ‘spreadsheets.google.com’ as the ‘currenty intended host’, which confirms what everybody was expecting as the ‘normal’ url for spreadsheets. I think developers deserve better notification from Google (targeted notifications like this would be much better than saying that ‘spreadsheets.google.com’ was just a *coincidence* that worked for 2+ years LL ). True, if you use the ‘content’ links of the entries instead, things would have been broken only for a more limited time, but sometimes it is harder for an app to use this than to manually construct the urls with ‘known’ prefixes.
