HTTPS with get_serving_url

I'd like to be able to serve my image-blobs over https, and it seems that swapping 'http' for 'https' in the string returned from get_serving_url does result in the image loading, but I wouldn't mind some reassurance that this is actually supported? (Or clarification if it isn't...).

There's an open issue [1] that suggests that it might not have always worked, that it was acknowledged relatively recently reinforces this, and a comment from yesterday suggests that it might not work all of the time, or for all people.
