We often get questions on this list about how to sign up for an App Engine Account in the case where you are not able to receive SMS messages, or if you don't have a mobile phone.  If you have those or similar issues, then as described here:
you can fill out a form:
which will put you on a list to receive an invitation.  (Note that this list is not processed automatically, so there can sometimes be a few days' delay).

Ah thank you. this was actually very useful. They should mention that in the Faqs, "which will put you on a list to receive and inviation". Otherwise I wouldn't have tried so many times to get an sms to go through.

Charlie,

You should have now received an email invitation-- let me know if that's not the case.

Amy, I went through the Appengine install but got to the same point as many others--I can't receive my verification code.  Since I was desperate (I NEED this for a class that's starting tomorrow) I tried resubmitting it several times.  Now I'm locked out of the process because I've sent too many SMS message requests.  How is it that Google has chosen such a flawed method of activation without having a reasonable alternative when things go wrong?  Surely there's a way to do it by e-mail or special codes that would still meet your security requirements.  It's not practical for me to wait for three days for a response--my class will be long over by then.  Needless to say, I'm astounded that Google, which does so many things so well, would use this system for activation.  I suppose I can always create a special gmail account for the duration of the class, but I'm hoping not to do that.  Please help!!!!!!!!

I just realized I never followed up with a response in here. Amy came to the rescue and got me an invite within a day or two of my post (I had already submitted to the waitlist https://appengine.google.com/waitlist/sms_issues ). Google IO was running that weekend and the crew were running a little behind. Thanks again Amy!

Hi Amy,
I'm in day 3 of waiting for an invite. My phone receives SMS messages just fine. My account was previously verified by phone and snail mail for use with Adsense. I'm signed up for CS253 at Udacity. I've been looking forward to the class for weeks but cannot move forward without an AppEngine account. Any suggestions?

hi Conor,

You should have now received your invitation. (The process can take a day or so).

Hi I need to sign up to Google App Engine to do a course on udacity. I currently do not have a mobile phone and would like an alternative solution. I have tried emailing this query twice and have received no reply yet. I would appreciate a response whether it is possible or not, and if it isnt can you supply me with the name of an alternative site that can provide me with this service!

The number is only used once to initially verify the account. You dont
need to change it to keep it current.

As you say you can see your list of apps, so have no further use for
SMS verification.
