What will occur to my GAE custom domain once the Google Apps free trial ends?

Hi,

I've setup a custom domain for my GAE app, and since registering a custom domain requires setting up a new google apps bussines account, I'm wondering what will occur with the custom domain once the free trail of 30 days finishes (and I don't continue using Google apps service).

- Will I have to pay Google Apps in order to continue having my custom domain pointing to my app?
- Will the domain continue working due to the fact that is already set up for my GAE?

Thanks in advance,
Alan

Yes and no. See this Stack Overflow page: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18560247/custom-domain-with-google-app-engine-now-that-google-apps-is-not-free-anymore

The TLDR is that sometimes it ends up working, but you're still locked out of the email account so it's difficult to change settings and so forth. And it's probably a safe bet that Google will fix this sooner or later, considering someone already posted it on Stack Overflow.

Thanks Vinny,

I just need to know whether my app will continue working with the custom domain or not. I do understand that I will not be able to change settings with regards to the domain, however, right now is critical to understand whether the domain will continue working or not.
If the google guys are working on it (hope they are), then I guess I will have to wait till I can change settings, which for the time being seems very unlikely for my use case.

Looking at the link you provided, I assume it will work, but doesn't look like something 100% sure, looks more like "wait and see the result", which is what I would like to avoid. Have you heard of any use case similar to mine with a succeful result of still having the domain active?

Thanks again,
Alan

I haven't tried it personally. I have heard rumors that it works (and apparently Roninio got it to work: https://groups.google.com/d/msg/google-appengine/dYZejIk7v08/KHzyXcFkF5MJ ) but I don't think it's a 100% success rate issue.

With that said, if you're just interested in getting the domain to work I would suggest using Cloudflare's reverse proxy service. It's part of Cloudflare's free tier, and it'll allow you to map your domain to a regular appspot application: http://blog.cloudflare.com/top-tips-for-new-cloudflare-users
