I followed getting started instructions for creating an application
with app engine, and it works. (http://spobby.appspot.com/)

Now, I am trying to map this to the domain name that I bought from
Yahoo.

I tried following instructions on the "Google Apps for Administrators"
http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=91077&useful=0&show_useful=1&comment=en%20:%201%20:%20&#helpful

However, this doesn't work for me.

1) I already registered with Google Apps for spobby.com account.

2) When I go to http://appengine.google.com/deployment/newdomain?app_id=spobby,
and enter "spobby.com", then click on "Add domain" button, it will try
to register me for

http://spobby.spobby.com instead of http://spobby.com

Two possible resolutions that I have in mind:

1) Remove myself from google apps for spobby.com account, not sure how
to do it, and try repeating steps again.

2) Somehow add CNAME and Name Servers in my yahoo control panel for
google account. I don't know values for cname and name servers.

Please advice me what I am missing.

you don't need to remove your domain from google apps. Instead add the
appengine application to your domain via the dashboad in GAE.
It will ask you to login with you admin for your domain. Then add the
url that you want to use for the application (app.yourdomain.com).

See this article for more info:
http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=91080
It worked perfectly for me.

I'm having the same problem when trying to add www.secondarydomain.com
from the Google App Engine dashboard. It goes to Google Apps to ensure
that I own the secondarydomain.com, and nothing seems to happen. No
error messages.

Jan and I have discussed this already, but for the record and anyone
else who struggled with this (like me).

It seems you cannot have two duplicate prefixes, even if the complete
URLs are different. Look on the Dashboard of your Google Domain for
an App in your that uses www as a prefix (like Google Web Pages) and
rename it to something else.

I finally went to my domain registrar, GoDaddy.com, and deleted the
www.mydomain.com. cname record that was automaticaly created for me.
Then I added my App Engine app by adding it as a service on Google
Apps with the domain name as www.mydomain.com.

Perhaps the process doesn't support changing where the domain name
points. Would be nice if there were an error message saying as much.

I'm having this problem as well. I have a CNAME record pointing at
the www subdomain of my domain, but can't add it as a subdomain for my
appengine app.

Oleg,

I don't know if this is a good answer, but here goes:

I'm pretty sure that you can't use an A record with Google App Engine
(GAE). That means you can't point your domain (e.g. spobby.com) to a
specific IP address. So there's no way to point spobby.com directly to
your GAE app except by _domain forwarding_ and/or _domain masking_,
which are services your Domain Registrar (e.g. Go Daddy) will provide
you with.

Therefore, you *must* use a subdomain to point to your GAE app, and
that requires you to set a CNAME record, which just points one
subdomain URL to another different URL. That's why GAE is telling you
to use spobby.spobby.com. The extra "spobby" is a subdomain.

Hopefully that helps...

Hi,

If you are having problems mapping the 'www' subdomain to your application, most of the time this is because another Google Apps service already holds the www mapping.  See what service is currently serving at this subdomain, and then go in to your cPanel for apps to delete that mapping before adding the mapping to Google App Engine.

In some cases a service might hold on to the mapping even after this service has been disabled (we've noticed this for sites).  In this case you'll need to re-enable the service to delete the mapping.  It may even be the case that you will need to re-add the mapping before deleting it.

I wrote up a quick page on the group detailing how this can be done if the 'www' mapping is currently owned by sites:
http://groups.google.com/group/google-appengine/web/deleting-existing-www-mapping-from-google-apps

Hopefully this will help, I know it's not the most intuitive process.
