I've been trying to add a custom domain to my app for the last couple of hours; the domain is an alias of my main Google Apps for Business account. It fails with an "invalid request" error if I sign in with my personal Gmail account, or infinitely redirects to the account selection page if I use my Apps for Business account.

I managed to add the custom domain from the Apps for Business interface, but this isn't documented in the Google Appengine Docs. What's going on?

I'm having the same problem.
1. Application Settings -> Add Domain ...
2. Provide domain and click on 'Add Domain ...'
3 Provide credentials
4. "invalid request"

in fact, you should click 'sign up for google apps' on the right, then continuously click next. after  it connects to your domain provider(like godaddy), you can add your domain successfully

I had this problem recently. The only way i managed to add custom domain was by creating a new google apps account. If i'm adding new domain to my old apps account, it is not primary and i get the behaviour you described. This sucks as it means you have to pay for new apps account each time you need new domain... Also the error reporting level is not on the level i would expect from google...

I hate GAE for this change

Right on cue, I'm making a plug for this issue. Please star it: https://code.google.com/p/googleappengine/issues/detail?id=8528

So sad that it's a 9-month old issue with no owner and medium priority. When it comes to custom domain management for GAE I'm at a point when I just throw my hands in the air in hopelessness.

I'm very confident that there is a solution in the works. I just keep bringing this issue forward because I think it's a serious gaping hole that weakens the overall offering and the weeks continue to leak by. Maybe a few more people should pitch in and just "git 'er done"!

Hi Wim,

You might be seeing this issue if the account you are logged into is not an administrator of the Google Apps domain you are trying to associate with your App Engine application, or the domain is not a Google Apps domain. Can you confirm if this is the case?

That's correct, the domain is not a Google Apps domain.

Same problem here. Only have personal Gmail account - but when I try to "add domain" it had me re-login to my Gmail account, then just says "Invalid Request".

+1 Same problem, SO frustrating when a blatant bug is present and continues to exist so in "production" for all of us to enjoy day after day silently tearing our hairs out

yes, same here, when tried add domain and click next, it was asking kept asking re-login and no proper error message. seems given accounts once exceed 5 applications registered, there could be restriction which was blocking. very drustating not showing proper error message!!

Sometimes that occurs when the account is not a Google Apps account. When you try to add the domain, App Engine needs you to log in to a Google Apps admin account of the domain you want to add.

Which Google account are you logging into when you receive this error?

Yes, frustrating. Wasted hours on this. This has worked for me in the past: make sure you are logged out if ALL Google accounts, and start over in an Incignito window, or another browser. The issue is that the app is finding a different Google login from the one you expect. It is a bug, without valuable error messages.
