email threads in outgoing mail

I have an application that both received and sends email. As a
feature, I want to set "References" SMTP header in order to maintain
correct logical message grouping by email clients. It seems that
while the code encounters no errors in setting the header (confirmed
with debug output) it never materializes on the client. I can't seem
to find any documentation regarding "References" SMTP header in GAE.
I realize it's a non-standard header, but there does not seem to be a
restriction on which headers we are allowed to set.

I was playing with headers just a month back and it all works just fine. What might not work in your case, is that when a real person (with a real email client) responds, the client might just not include your custom headers in the replay.
