I totally understand that you can't host such content on Google App Engine, but to what extent can it be linked to? If a user posts a link to a NSFW site on a GAE app, will that be in violation of the policies?

I'm planning to make something akin to reddit in the sense that it's user-submitted links about various user-specified topics, I'm considering using GAE.

These program policies are annoying, they seem so subjective and whimsical. "hate-related content" could mean a "hate" button (as opposed to "like") would cause an app to be disabled.

To me, it seems like these policies are more for Google to cover their asses, rather than serving a practical purpose, has Google responded to any violations in the past?

Yes they have responded to violations.  General rule, if you can’t run Google Adsense against it, it probably won’t play on GAE.

Not quite the same thing. Building a feature that allows users to hate broccoli is not the same thing as building a site about the eradication of [insert ethnic or religious group here]. The policy is worded to ban the latter.

I agree that the program policies are very poorly written, they often ambiguous, and in at least one known case, Google themselves potentially breached the rules by uploading artwork depicting female nudity to an app they created.

IMHO, the policies need to be re-written, they are way too ambiguous as well as restrictive, Google are really limiting themselves with regards to FUD that user-generated content would create.

And in regards to Ikai's brocoli example:
"I really fucking hate brocoli, I want to get a knife and stab the shit out of it."

c. Hate-related or violent content;

Sure, you probably won't get your app shutdown if a user posts such a comment, but that doesn't mean that it isn't literally in breach of policy. Hidden meanings and exceptions, and silent agreements are counter-productive.

Amazon's content policies are much nicer: http://aws.amazon.com/aup/

Yeah, Noah, I get ya. We do need to clean up the language on that page and make the policy more clear. I'm just trying to give useful answers in the meantime.

Can people just pay more for nsfw content. If you want to run nsfw on your app. Notify Google. Google creates an elevated pricing structure and boom.
Google makes money off it all the time. Sure Google Instant won't show you...but the regular search will...and Google Instant brings you to the regular search.
If I type in any query about the "interesting" parts of the human body...I get results and ads to sift through.
Whats up with the arbitrary barrier?

google.com doesn't care, gmail doesn't care, bezos doesn't care...Who's the Big Double O G over there that said we need a policy for "content" on App Engine?
I don't think the Taliban is going to be making any App Engine apps when they have youtube?

If you seriously want to invest considerable time, effort, and expense in developing an NSFW website, I suggest you read my comments in this earlier thread:

Even if Google explicitly allowed NSFW content today, that doesn't mean its policies won't change tomorrow.  Political and social winds change quickly.  You would be crazy to build on a platform that is not *easily* portable to another hosting provider.

Hi Douglas,

It's not a matter of profit or cost - there are real regulatory barriers to hosting adult content in many jurisdictions, and it would take substantial time and effort to satisfy them for App Engine, and on a per-app basis. In a nutshell, it doesn't scale very well. :)
