I have a service that runs on google app engine, it is supposed to subscribe to a topic and do some work.

The behavior is very strange, I see the service running from the logs but it does not consume any messages.

When I run the service on my local machine it does consume messages correctly.

Does GAE not support pubsub subscriber services?

GAE supports PubSub subscriber services. Does it happen on both push and pull subscriptions?

There are calls that gives you some metrics to have a better idea on what is happening, like:

subscription/num_undelivered_messages

to get the number of unacknowledged messages or

subscription/num_outstanding_messages

to get the number of outstanding push messages.

The full list of calls are listed here

It is using the default pull configuration. I am using the google-cloud pubsub nodejs client.

What I mean by not consuming, my consume callback function does not get triggered on Google app engine, but locally it does.

You can call  to get the number of unacknowledged messages or "suscription/num_outstanding_messages" to get the number of outstanding push messages. The full list of metrics are listed here. This may help you debug the strange behavior.

Do they show up on the metrics when you run "pull_ack_message_operation_count", "pull_ack_request_count", "pull_message_operation_count", etc?
