You probably noticed I've been complaining a lot here recently with various issues :)  but not everything is bad so I wanted to say thank you guys from GAE team for perfectly implementing SSL! Everything works like a charm, easy to use interface and painless certificates management. Nice job! Thank you!!

Great to hear!

I'm now mostly wary of the cost of VIP. I'm sure the team would like it to be cheaper, but if it can't be done, it can't be done. I guess one option is to use SNI until an app has enough paying customers for VIP, or just take the hit and do it right.

From the launch message:
"We will be offering two types of SSL service, Server Name Indication
(SNI) and Virtual IP(VIP). SNI will be significantly less expensive
than VIP when this service is fully launched"

Yes, I don't as well understand why VIP option is so expensive. Is it because they use proxy to pass traffic through SSL to app engine instances? I can't believe dedicated IP for app use would cost so much?

Obviously isn't a trivial problem - I notice Heroku costs $100 for "IP-based" SSL.

Although they do have a 'hostname-based" SSL for $20pm.

How to implement it?

Is SSL still exclusive to testers?

Any indication as to when this will be available to everyone?

@Andrius
Thanks for the feedback, it is fantastic to hear that you like the SSL
service and the management interface for it. I have passed this
feedback on to the team.

@Tapir, jon

SSL is currently exclusive to Trusted Testers and cannot be configured
by other users. Once SSL has finished the testing phase it will be
made generally available.

Sadly I do not have a date to announce for when it will be made
generally available, however we will make an announcement when we do.
SSL is one of our top priorities and the App Engine team is working
very hard to launch this feature.
