8 bit PNG output to save bandwidth

It would be handy to be able to specify 8-bit PNG output using the images service, in the interest of reducing bandwidth.

At the moment AFAIK you can only get 32-bit PNG images out of the service.

It seems odd to be launching initiatives like PageSpeed and leave obvious optimizations like this undone.

Perhaps its on the list of issues & I missed it?

Hi Tim,

Can you file a feature request on our issue tracker, and let us know the URL of the issue?
Please note that if you're using Python2.7 runtime, I think you can use PIL for creating 8-bit PNG files.
