Scary error - 503, and why is there Google branding on the page?

Hello all,
Just saw this for the first time - after a long wait my app finally
pops up with:

"503. That’s an error.

The service you requested is not available at this time.

Service error -27. That’s all we know."

The request evidently never reached my app, as I saw nothing in the
logs. After a few minutes, my app was again reachable though having
problems serving static content, and a few minutes after that it was
back to normal.

I get that GAE will have little hiccups, but what really disturbed me
was that the error page contained the "Google disassembled robot"
branding, which made it look like my app is a Google property. This is
a really big problem for me - and I think that we should be able to
supply customized error pages for catastrophic cases when requests
don't even reach our apps.

I would think that google would like it as little as I like it when my
domain leads to a Google-branded error page, its misleading in all
sorts of ways.

Cheers,
Mike

I'm getting this same thing right now.

Nothing in the error logs.

All of my cron jobs appear to be running with no issues, but they are
not showing up as requests in the requests/second chart.

The requests/second chart has been flat at 0 for over 18 hours now!

Does anyone have any information about this?

I just checked and this still seems to be happening to my app for one
of every ten requests or so. Please file a production issue since its
so much worse for you and give me the URL, I'll star it.

Got hit too, several times.

The status page doesn't show anything.

Just wanted to add that this seems to be increasing in frequency for
my app, and now its every other request.

To clarify, this is the image that's being served, which is not OK:
