I just wonder if there are any updates about Dimensions and Metrics regarding Ecommerce transactions.

Situation:

Now Dimensions and Metrics can only be sent with a transaction, not with an Item.

In an earlier thread, it was said that this was something that Google wanted to support:

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/google-analytics-analyticsjs/ojrDwJhyQs4/5AIFsZViKzIJ

Sending dimensions with a Transaction vs. Items

If you send a dimension with a transaction, the dimension will be attached to all the Items.

There are situations where it would be really helpful to be able to attach a dimension to just one product in the transaction.

Will this be possible?

Sending Metrics with a Transaction

If you send a Metric with a Transaction, you end up with some “crazy” numbers, since the Metric number will be summed for each addItem.

Below is an example of a demo transaction with many Items (24 x addItem). I use Pax as an example.

Number of Pax in this transaction is 2, but since each Item is adding the Pax number together, the Pax number for this transaction is reported as 48 for the transaction.

We have to drill down to the SKU-level for this transaction to get the Pax number per product correct.

To get the correct Metric number for a transaction you now have to send the same transaction twice. One time with products, and one time without products, but with the Metric(s).

But by using this method, Pax numbers aren’t attached to Items which in this case is wanted.

I know my example is a special case, but for now I have some problems with how to use Metrics together with a Transaction.

Google, can you share some lights about what you are planning for when it comes to Metrics and Dimensions in connection with transactions?

Regards,

Eivind

Sorry to bump this one.

Hope someone from Google can share some lights about how Dimensions and Metrics are planned to work together with Ecommerce-transactions and addItem.

Eivind

Hi Eivind,

We pushed out a new version of the Ecommerce plugin today that tries to address this scenario. With this release, you can pass in dimensions, metrics and any of the other fields in addItem and addTransaction calls. This allows you to send values with individual fields.

Can you test this out and see if your use-case is addressed?

Hi Avi

This is great news. Thumbs up.

I will let you when I have tested this.

Fantastic news. Thanks, Avi.

I spoke at MeasureCamp about how I'm planning to use this functionality. I think it should be really useful.

Cheers,
Matt

Hi everyone,

I have implemented item transaction and item level custom variables and dimensions. What I'm seeing is that it is indeed working, except for one product level custom metric, which is set to currency type. My other product levels custom metrics (integer) and dimensions are working fine. I checked in HTTPFOX and the data for the currency custom metric is being sent correctly, but the corresponding column in my custom report shows a 0. Is there a bug with custom metrics set as currency? Or maybe I'm missing something on my end.

Thanks.

Hi Lothaire,

I am having this issue too. I have product cost data as a currency custom metric, and it just appears as 0 in the GA interface, even though it is being sent OK in HTTPFox.

Hey Matt,

i'm about to try a similar setup. Any insights to the Scope of Custom Dimensions & Metrics to be used for Transaction or Items?

Did you solve you metric eport issue ?
