Custom Variable with Phone Number

Hi All,

Question: would it be against the policy to post a phone number as a custom variable via the measurement protocol?

Yes, that would be considered PII.

Hi Philip,

OK, thanks for the quick reply. So part of the policy says the following:

or data that permanently identifies a particular device (such as a unique device identifier if such an identifier cannot be reset)

If we save the phone number on our side in our own db would it be acceptable to send a generated id as a custom variable that would allow us to associate to the number on our end? I'm assuming the goal is that we're not saving personal data on the analytics side and that this would be an acceptable workaround?

That's the idea. The intent of the User ID feature is it's supposed to be an ID in *your* database, not something Google Analytics could ever associate with a particular person.
