Am I using it wong? Has that feature been removed from the metrics and dimensions page?

It's still there, Chris, you just have to hover over each field name to see the checkbox.

I got the hover and checkbox. But when checked, it isn't showing the compatible metrics and dimensions.

Try the lowly impressions metric - check that box and plenty of other things gray-out.

Many of the restrictions have been lifted over time.

The issue is that no other things are shown - greyed out or now. See screenshot.

...your screenshot shows the results of a search for "impress"....hence only two items are shown.

Were going in circles here. I'm pointing out a bug in the usability of the new interface. Let's start over....
step 1: I search for impressions
 - note that "expand all" is checked
step 2: in hover ga:impressions and select checkbox
 - note that expand all is still checked
step 3: clear search box
 - note that upon removal of last character the "expand all" get unchecked

In that last step, "expand all" should remain checked unless I explicitly uncheck it. Otherwise I'm not getting the information I came looking for. And it just bad GUI form to change a user setting unless it would result in an error - which in this case it does not.

I was responding to your initial question -- the interface does indeed still show valid combinations. What you have pointed out is a specific use case and an annoying collapse of the fields, but it still shows valid/invalid combinations when you expand it.

If you start with Expand All checked, as you check various fields, invalid combinations become greyed out.  I don't use the search feature.
