I tried to search via Google Blogs and found it has disappeared.

I was able to find it in a roundabout way (you can search for it, though already results have begun to disappear) but understand it has been deprecated.

Does anyone know the reason for this decision.  It was a hugely valuable tool, with, as far as I can tell, no comparable equal?  Does anyone know of any other search service that even approaches it?  I feel suddenly like I am in the wild days of the early internet with no decent search engine to guide me.

You are correct: there is no real equivalent to the Google Blog Search that I know of. The best suggestion I have would be to utilize a Custom Search Engine (CSE) set to search your favorite blogs. You can then use the Custom Search API to access that CSE.
