Custom Search API linked to Google Cloud Platform

Hello,

I've been using Custom Search API successfully for a few months.

I just got an email that my free trial of "Google Cloud Platform" has expired and asking to upgrade my account.

My question is do I have to buy a Google Cloud Platform subscription just to use Custom Search API? I have no need for a hosting environment right now.
