using ajax search api with google co-op cse custom search engine

I set up a custom seach engine using the google co-op cse, and in the
control panel it says i can use the AJAX search API to get more control
over my search results, and that i use my Custom Search Engine's unique
identifier to connect with the API.

How do i use the two in tandem?
i had played with the AJAX API by itself and saw that the results were
kinda truncated (not multiple pages of results) so i tried the co-op
CSE which more resembled what I wanted.

However, it would seem the CSE is pretty limied on controlling the
layout. How do I use the AJAX API with the CSE I've set up to better
customize the results, and take advantage of AJAX modules like Tabbed
display?
