Since the Google API is nearing the end of its life, what alternatives are there for web services? I run an IRC bot for a fairly active community, and one of the services that the bot provides is quick Google searches over chat; since the new Google Custom Search requires a web page to embed into, that isn't usable for me.

Thanks,

Aelanna

Have you looked at the Custom Search API? It allows programmatic access to Custom Search Engines, which may be set up to search the whole web. The down side is that it offers only 100 free queries per day. To use it more than that, you have to activate billing and pay at a rate of $5 / 1000 queries, with a maximum of 10,000 queries per day.
